When A Poet Goes Birding

A poet goes out for adventure
He finds rest under a shade
Of a Yellow-Backed Acacia tree
That’s full of nests and melodies
And chirping weaver birds
The nests are all on one side
Facing the sunset’s direction
To avoid destruction by the wind
Which blows from the east

The tree is on the edge of a dam
That is slowly running dry
Because of the absence of rains
A Sacred Ibis expertly lands
On the water edge and starts
Probing the muddy areas for prey
Then two Hadada Ibises arrive
Displacing two Mountain Wagtails
That move away a little further
For a moment, a little drama ensues
The male pursues the female
As if ready to mate,
But the female resists, the male gives up

Dozens of white butterflies
Are on a migratory mode
Passing across the dam waters
Some stopping for nectar
On some flowers nearby
A lone yellow butterfly
Joins the large swam
A beautiful site to behold

Later on a White Eyed Slaty Flycatcher
Perches on a lower branch
And two Olive Thrushes
Look for insects in a bush
Deep in the waters are two Little Grebes
Swimming to freshen their bodies
A half collared dove also joins
Time for the poet to leave
With a smile on his face
For such a day full of birdwatching!
